Little lessons

Monday, August 20th, 2007

I learn more from small children than I do from all the manual I read.

Whats more, the stuff kids teach me is the important stuff. Kids don’t hate, we teach them to do that. Kids give everything from the bottom of their hearts.

Take the neighbor’s kid. He spends his time collecting “beautiful rocks”. To him, they are rare and hard sought gems. He is very very proud of his stones and if you allow him he will show you his prized gems.

If you are indeed impressed and he notices, then he will shine up his most favorite, and with no expectations from you it is yours. to keep, and yet it is apparent it is dear to him, yet he has no thoughts of selfishness believing that his rock will make you as happy as it did him.

That is a deep and powerful lesson  right there alone. You cant learn that in a book.

Microsoft 1978

Monday, August 13th, 2007

i am known for making fun of Microsoft, so while I am doign that, I am also making a valid point.

This is a photo of the people that came to be Microsoft. Now the largest most powerful corporation in the world.

Who knew? I mean, if these folks approached you and asked you to invest in this coporation, would you? Most wouldnt. But even more, these folks for all their lack of fashion, were also pitching the idea of building machines that could send mail without paper, and putting user friendly computers in every home in America.

I wonder how often they were scoffed?

And now, how far they have come! It boggles my mind, and it goes to show you cannot judge a book by its cover. As much as I dislike Microsoft, my hats  off to these guys, not only are they ridiculously wealthy, they changed the world.

Bear in mind the person you next speak to in 10 years could be president, or some wealthy influential person.

I Must Have This!!!

This piece of sexiness is the Alienware Area-51 m9750! Hot huh?

For example, it has TWO 512 mb Nvidia graphics cards.  TWO hard drives TWO processors. A 17 inch High Def screen.

The hard drives are 250GB each. It comes stock with 2 gigs of DDR ram. That and the vid cards make serious gaming a reality on a portable machine.

It has a DVD burner with Bluray.

Admit it, you want one too.

MacFUSE

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

If you are a Mac user, and you need to access your Mac from a remote location this is the tool for you.

You connect to your machine remotely, and in a secure fashion using ssh, which means all your communication is encrypted.

You can move files easily and transfer them via a “drag and drop” system. Truly fantastic, as usually ssh means tedious command line typing. Not so here. Ease of use is the flavor of the day.

Angry IP Scanner

Friday, June 29th, 2007

“Angry IP scanner” is program that watches ports, and can scan IP addresses. It can be configured to scan a given range and and a selection of ports, or you can turn it loose and see what it finds.

By comparison, the binary is small when you also examine port scanners, which is nice if you are working from a machine with low resources. The scanner pings the IP addresses you tell it to and upon a response will gather information, port scans, MAC addresses, hostnames. There are plugins available to gather even more information.

It can even tell you who is logged in on a remote machine. You can save the results to any number of formats from HTML to CSV.

It is Open Source so anyone who can code can further extend its functionality.
